A woman with back acne

Acne has been a silent confidence-killer amongst women for centuries.

While 90% of women suffer from facial acne at some point in their lives, 60% of women also suffer from acne in other parts of the body such as the back and the butt.

Dealing with acne often leads to helplessness and bouts of depression. By limiting the choice of outfits and going out in public, most people report poor self-esteem due to this issue.

However, we’re here to tell you that your problem isn’t permanent!

Our Licensed Master Esthetician at Ooh La La Esthetics has been helping people with back acne (bacne) for a long time. Her services in Herndon, VA, include eyebrow waxing, underarm waxing, dermaplaning, eyebrow tinting, facial services, and special event makeup.

Learn all about bacne, its causes and treatment.

Bacne; What is it?

Bacne is the millennial term for back acne. Just like facial acne, it involves several pimples in the back region.

Known as acne vulgaris in scientific terms, it exists in various forms and stages; inflammatory or non-inflammatory.

Inflammatory: The inflammatory versions exist as blackheads and whiteheads which are called comedones. These are clogged pores where bacteria get trapped. While they’re not painful, they have the potential to become so.

Non-inflammatory: Pimples, nodules, and cysts come under this category. All three forms are painful. Pimples and cysts may get filled with pus which can worsen the infection.

Causes

Bacne is caused by a buildup of dead cells and sebum, the skin’s natural oil.

Contrary to popular opinion, it is not due to poor hygiene. Most research traces its cause to genetics and hormonal imbalances. This means that if acne runs in the family, or if your body is experiencing increased amounts of androgen, chances of getting bacne are high.

Stress is also a major contributor to acne as it distorts hormonal balance.

Certain cases of bacne have also been traced to the side effects of medicines, antidepressants in particular.

Treatment

There are several ways to help curb bacne.

Pills: Doctors may prescribe antibiotics to combat the bacteria that causes acne or birth control pills to balance the hormones. Severe situations may be dealt with isotretinoin. However, all medications must be taken after thorough hormone checks and upon a doctor’s prescription.

Conscious diet: Making a few changes to your diet such as limiting carbs and including plenty of water can help with bacne.

Good Hygiene: Being extra cautious with hygiene and choosing the right cleanser with salicylic acid, can help nip acne in the bud.

Back Facials and Masks: A bit of extra love can go a long way. Get back facials to deep-cleanse the skin, boost blood flow and nourish the skin.
